Direphoenix first logged into WoW in September of 2005, dragged kicking and screaming by RL friend Direweasel (whose new main character is Shubnigurath). Not fond of fantasy games in general, the only thing that turned the tide was the fact that Shubnigurath was going to make a toon on Dark Iron in order to get into a PAA guild as was read about in the Penny Arcade comic news. A huge fan of Penny Arcade, this was enough to turn Direphoenix's hardened anti-Tolkeinish fantasy views away long enough to create a character.

Seeing how the fantasy world of magic was still distasteful to the preferred sci-fi, Direphoenix chose to make his character a hunter. Reason being that the closest thing to technology that this world has is bows and primitive gunpowder rifles and blunderbusses. The hunter pet would take a secondary position in Direphoenix's priorities, and the marksman tree made for a comfortable home for someone looking to excel in maximizing their skill in projectiles and firearms.
